Election of Dean and Vice-Deans for 2024-2027

In the Fall of 2023, it is set for the election of the Deanery for the Faculty of Law for the period 01.01.24 – 31. 12. 27.

The Deanery will consist of one Dean and two Vice-Deans (Vice-Dean for Studies and Vice-Dean for Research). The Election Regulation of the University of Oslo (§ 23 pt. 1) states that the Deanery is elected as one team. The Dean decides which one of the two Vice-Deans that will be the Deputy Dean.

Positions as Dean, Vice-Dean for Studies and Vice-Dean for Research, are described in the Administration regulations of the faculty, §9.

Candidate Proposal

The Dean and Vice-Deans are elected by employees and registered students at the faculty. The eligibility for the position as Dean and Vice-Dean, are academic employees by the faculty and external candidates. The same qualifications are required for external candidates as for internal candidates.

Anyone with the right to vote in an election, can suggest a proposal on an eligible person within its own voting group. A candidate proposal shall be presented in written form to the Electoral Committee. Candidate proposals for the Deanery election must be signed by at least 10 persons with the right to vote in the constituency. Nobody can sign more than one proposal to the same position.

Implementation of the Election

The Election Regulation of the University of Oslo states that an election normally shall be executed in the Fall semester. The Election Board of the Faculty of Law has proposed a schedule for the election which is approved by the Rector and the University Director. The expected end of the election is Thursday 12th of October, and the results are planned to be announced on Friday 13th of October. 

The election will be executed in one of two ways:

  1. As an electronical election based on preference, if there are two or more teams that runs for election
  2. If there is only one team, it is chosen by the current Faculty Board according to the University’s Election Regulation (§ 26 pt. 2). The suggested Deanery is then considered as chosen if they get the majority of votes in the Election Board.

The Electoral Committee

After proposal from the Faculty Board, the University Board’s hiring committee has appointed the following Electoral Committee for the Deanery Election in 2023:

  • Professor Dag Michalsen (Head of Committtee) with Professor Thomas Ugelvik as deputy member
  • Associate Professor Katrine Fredwall with Doctoral Research Fellow Gullik-André Fjordbo as deputy member
  • Student Nasjida Noorestany with student Ole Forfang as deputy member
  • Section Manager Randi Saunes with Head of Office Eli Knotten as deputy member

The Electoral Board’s mandate is authorized in The Election Regulation’s §22:

The Electoral Board ensures that the description of a position is known for voters as well as potential candidates, and that the candidates are presented in a way that gives the voters a solid foundation to evaluate their qualifications for the role. The Committee shall actively seek for eligible candidates. Each member of the Committee has independent rights of proposal.

The Electoral Board

The Faculty Board has appointed an Electoral Board for the period 01.01.23 – 31.12.26. The Electoral Board consists of:

  • Associate Professor Sofie Høgestøl (Chair)
  • Doctoral Research Fellow Daksha Sriragulan
  • Student Nora Dahl Mostue
  • Section Manager Steinar Hafto Myre

The Electoral Board is responsible for the elections of Dean and Vice-Dean, Head of Department, and deputy for the Head of Department, as well as the elections for the Board of Faculty and the Department Board, being executed according to the University’s Election Regulation.  

The Faculty Director organizes an Election Secretariat subordinate to the Election Board. Adviser Andreas Mobråthen is the contact person for the Election Secretariat.
