Iceland's Open Prisons

The pains of imprisonment at the 'shallow end'.

Iceland's Open Prisons are small, rural, remote and set in a picturesque setting. The atmosphere is often referred to as 'calm' and officers frequently referred to as 'friendly'. But what is the subjective experience of these prisons? How do prisoners discuss their experience and in what terms?

This presentation will report on an immersive prison project in which I spent a week each in both Open Prisons in Iceland. I will discuss findings from interviews and observations to come to terms with the unique nature of these prisons and the experience of prisoners within them.
