The financial risks of climate change are increasingly recognized, as highlighted by the widely cited Task Force of Climate Related Financial Disclosure (TCFD). However, the financial risks of continued pressure on other planetary boundaries also needs recognition, as do the risks associated with the exploitation of people and growing inequalities in and between countries. The setting up of a Task Force for Nature-Related Financial Disclosures is one step, but it is moving forward far too slowly. Faster action is needed across sectors and countries. Ultimately, the risk of unsustainability is existential. There are a number of scenarios that can lead to societal collapse and profitable business is unlikely in all of them.
Integrating all aspects of unsustainability fully into traditional risk management is therefore crucial. In this workshop, we will discuss how we can move forward in a transdisciplinary meeting between academics and practitioners. As a starting point for the discussion, we will present our work on Financial Risks of Unsustainability: A Research Agenda.
