Abstract
A major barrier for the Sustainable Development Goals is the paradigm in which they are expected to become applicable. Profit maximisation and exploitation are prevalent features of the destructive global business activities facilitated by corporate law. These stand in the way of the social justice dimensions of sustainability. However, an alternative approach might be possible. This paper proposes a more compassionate, humanistic and systems-based paradigm to recalibrate corporate behaviours. The SDGs present an opportunity for alleviating human suffering by focusing on the interdependences between different groups and activities and they demonstrate the interconnections and synergies involved in sustainable development. They provide a basis for a compassionate approach which may, in turn, be the bedrock to their success.
