European laws and standards for sustainable products: a crucial element for transitioning to a circular economy

Welcome to a lunch seminar, where Carl Dalhammar from Lund University will provide an overview of European product law and how it can support the transition to a circular economy.

Open to all interested.

Abstract

The European Union (EU) is adopting an increasing number of laws that address sustainability issues in supply chains (deforestation, supply chain governance, conflict minerals etc.). A related trend is the increasing regulation of products: their energy efficiency performance, toxic substances in products, mandated collection and recycling of used products, and so on. More recently, there has been several laws and proposed laws aimed at support longer product lifetimes through influcencing product durability and repairability, and rules aimed at combatting product destruction of new goods (unsold goods/e-returns). In order to kickstart poorly functioning recycling markets, ‘recycled content obligations’ (where new goods must contained recycled materials) are also adoped.

In the presentation, Carl will account for the key rules adopted or proposed by the EU, and some laws adopted by EU Member States, and discuss some challenges ahead, including market surveillance and the harmonization of national initiatives.
