Sustainability is (Still) Possible! The work continues

The Research Group Sustainability Law, hosted by the Faculty of Law, University of Oslo, has a vibrant group of academic members from institutions all over the world. Our aim is to contribute to global sustainability through interdisciplinary analyses of law.

Through our newsletter series, we give you information about exciting events, new publications and dissemination of our research. In this newsletter, we highlight an exciting SMART Network call for papers, our annual PhD seminar, and Blogging for Sustainability.

Some highlights

Sustainability Law hosts two international research networks. We are thrilled to announce the result of work to revitalise the Sustainable Market Actors Research Network, the SMART Network:

The Steering Committee of the SMART Network has published a call for papers for the first SMART Network Symposium, Sustainability is (Still) Possible! Governing Market Actors for a Safe and Just Space. The symposium will be followed by a SMART Network Meeting. The event will be hosted by the University of Turin, 18-19 September 2025, and the deadline for submission of abstracts is 1 April 2025.

Breaking down horizontal and vertical silos continues to be important part of the work we do in Sustainability Law. This is reflected both in the 2024 Sustainability PhD seminar and in the discussions in our Sustainability Law seminar series:

The topic of this year’s Sustainability Law PhD Seminar is the regulatory influence of international laws and policies on European economic actors. The seminar is hybrid, welcoming participants in Oslo as well as through zoom. This year’s seminar includes the launch of Research Handbook on International Solidarity and the Law (2024), edited by Cecilia Bailliet.
Sustainability Law seminar series consists of informal one-hour work-in-progress seminars most weeks. The topics range from traditional legal discussions to blue-sky thinking about how to make the world a better place. These seminars are always digital or hybrid. Would you like to present?
