By Jukka Mähönen, University of Oslo and Vera Palea, University of Turin

Abstract

This paper delves into the concept of double materiality in corporate sustainability reporting by adopting a normative approach based on the political constitution of the European Union (EU) established by the Lisbon Treaty. Considering the provisions of the Treaty, the paper critically examines the current organization of the accounting standards-process. Finally, it provides proposals for policy intervention aimed at incorporating the EU’s constitutional principles into accounting lawmaking.
