About the group
Scholars in the social sciences – and increasingly in legal research – face ethical dilemmas at every stage of their research practice, from project design to fieldwork to findings dissemination. Ethical decisions in research must consider individuals and groups in diverse positions and with often-contradictory desires and needs: project participants, peers, general society, and the researchers themselves.
While abundant ethical guidelines exist in Norway and abroad, deontological principles are not always easily translated into applied decisions. Furthermore, despite debates on research ethics being a perennial academic activity, ethical challenges in research require a permanent (rather than ad-hoc) culture of sharing, acknowledging and reflecting on new insights and challenges.
Ambitions
- Gather and increase expertise on research ethics (from project design to fieldwork to findings dissemination);
- Serve as an informal advisory entity with collegial capacity for individuals seeking individual advice (not a review board);
- Connect with teaching at bachelor and master levels, in particular qualitative (KRS4105) and quantitative (KRS4106) method courses. Potentially contribute also to PhD mandatory courses;
- Build a database for internal use to consult when seeking guidance on research ethics (academic texts and meeting minutes) available at the group's webpage.
Duration
The group is active for 2 years from 1 August 2022.
