Isabel Vieira Borges is assistant professor at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. She is visiting the Labour Law Group to give the guest lecture: What's New in European Union Labor Law (I): the Minimum Wage Directive (2022).
The minimum wage directive is highly controversial in the Nordic countries, due to the strong tradition of leaving wage regulation to the social partners. The position of the Norwegian government is that the directive falls outside the scope of the EEA-agreement. Denmark is challenging the legal basis for the directive and has brought an annulment case to the CJEU: Denmark takes minimum wage directive to the EU Court — Nordic Labour Journal. Professor Borges will present the directive and reflect on the legal basis and the issue of EEA-relevance.
The lecture will be followed by prepared comments by Andreas van den Heuvel, and there will be time for discussion.
