When measuring overall economic performance and considering specific investments and transitions with side effects detrimental to natural resources and the environment, there is a crucial need for quantifying natural assets and taking depreciation effects into account. To this end, concepts and methods for accounting and valuation are emerging and developing. This seminar aims to gather interested colleagues and others to discuss the Natural Capital concept against this background. In addition, we wish to stimulate exchange among all participants to spur general thinking in this area. Finally, we also hoped that the seminar could inspire future scholarly work in the area –notably at the intersections between economics, law, and politics.

About Sir Dieter Helm: Sir Helm is Professor of Energy Policy at the University of Oxford and Fellow of Economics at New College, Oxford. He chaired of the UK Natural Capital Committee and has authored several books including: Natural Capital: Valuing the Planet (2015), Green and Prosperous Land (2019) and Net Zero: How We Stop Causing Climate Change (2020).

Program: The presentations will be 20–25 minutes with 5–10 minutes of questions at the end. Coffee, tea and baguettes for lunch will be provided.

For admittance to Statistics Norway and to receive lunch, please sign up for your attendance latest May 15th using the registration form.
