  The use of BIM as data management platform for the AEC sectors has been observed primarily in the designing and building phases rather than in post-construction applications such as facilities management and conservation. As the concept of BIM reached maturity, there has been a growing interest in applying the technology to heritage buildings and towns. This paper examines the phenomenon by considering how the HBIM application in managing historic towns might be described and what type of information will give further insights. This study is using a scoping literature review. Finding showed that the HBIM is involved in every critical step of the HUL approach by exploiting the technology to better mapping the heritage resources, interpreting heritage technical knowledge, digital assessment of vulnerabilities, enhancing efficiency, and prioritizing action to be made. The digitization is costly and time spending, but the HBIM output demonstrate a superior potential to manage historic towns.

  The construction industry is facing many challenges and several concepts as Data Template Building Logbook and Digital Twin are presented as different solutions to solve the industry challenges. The perception is often that these concepts somehow are fighting each other. To explore supporting action to implementation, a literature review has been conducted. The thematic analysis of the findings was done by use of the Integrated Design and Delivery Solutions framework. A conceptual review was done to explore the potential impact and capability of the concepts of Data Template Building Logbook and Digital Twin. So far has much been published, but limited been implemented in practice of each concept, despite their potential impact. The results indicate that improved understanding, not just development each concept, of the importance on integration between the concepts of Data Template Building Logbook and Digital Twin will contribute to synergies, and by this boosting implementation and innovation.

  Despite significant research effort, there is a still a lack of complete solutions for automated compliance checking of regulatory, normative, and contractual requirements pertaining to buildings. This is reflected in numerous studies and prototype implementations targeting exclusively prescriptive requirements with numeric, unambiguous data, rather than descriptive, vague information in descriptive, performance-based building codes. We argue that a formal, systematic, logic-based approach to tackle qualitative performance goals and design requirements is not only valuable, but also necessary for enabling traceable, transparent code checking applications, and reducing laborious, error-prone manual processing. To this end we investigate a dedicated spatial reasoner, ASP4BIM, specifically designed for tackling implicit, uncertain, and fallible human knowledge about building-specific rules and constraints, such as objects’ functions and structures, and occupants’ experiences and behavior. Through empirical evaluations with large-scale buildings and real-world code provisions, we show that our approach increases the number of requirements eligible for digital processing.

  Building Information Modelling (BIM) is an ICT application of tools and processes. There is a limited understanding of the real root causes of challenges in implementation among practitioners. As part of an ongoing action research project in a Norwegian municipality, we held a series of focus group sessions with technology users. We explored the reasons for the slow uptake of BIM in the context of the need for information management. We find limited engagement in information management processes necessary for successful application of BIM. However, we find great interest in achieving more sustainable outcomes in the municipality. We argue a possible re-alignment of the purported benefits of BIM towards emerging sustainable development goals in the municipality. The relevancy of this article is to find leads to actionable solutions to the slow digital transformation in the built environment. We find it paradoxical that increased BIM adoption might be achieved by not focusing on BIM at all, but by focusing on achieving sustainable outcomes, for which both BIM and information management is necessary.

  This paper explores how the utilization of 4D BIM can bridge the gap between actual and planned progress. The preparation of progress plans usually occurs when limited information is available, which entails revisions of schedules when new information emerges, and actual progress deviates from planned progress. When moving from pooled to sequential to reciprocal interdependencies, there is a need for more complex communication and coordination in order to prevent difficulty in obtaining information, completing tasks, and decision-making. The key to successfully using 4D is to avoid negative iterations by downscaling and planning more schematically. This includes task detailing and breaking down reciprocal interdependencies into pooled and sequential interdependencies. The findings of this conference paper indicate that increased utilization of 4D is limited due to the lack of an organizational culture investing in standardized policies and procedures for digital solutions to reveal the capability and capacity in 4D BIM-based systems.

  This study explore experiences from ongoing implementation of BIM in existing bachelor engineering courses at Oslo Metropolitan University in Norway. This is done by a combination of semi-structured interview, net-based survey of management, lectures and students at the department. The findings are analysed by use of the multi-motive information systems continuance (MISC) model, which focus on hedonic, extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. This study do not confirm the traditional view that young students are positive and old teachers are negative to BIM, or that use of BIM will increase by itself when I become more mature. The most important aspects for increased implantation of BIM is to create a dynamic learning environment who support and combine all three types of motivation by having an intentional attitude to learning objectives, assessment criteria and context and relevance of competence. This approach can support implantation of BIM in all professional course in an engineering study as an integrated part of the learning outcome by focusing on “Use of BIM to learn Construction”.

  This paper focus on understanding the role of Construction Information Classification Systems (CICS). In-formation Classification Systems (ICS) that range several economic activities including construction are also explored in order to find touch points and define future trends. This starts with an overview of classification systems, framed with ISO 12006-2:2015. Two different realities, Norway and Portugal, were studied follow-ing ISO framework, providing a vision of the developments and applicability of both types of classification systems. Needs for further development have been discussed in a relation to the new possibilities of BIM. The outcome of this study is a list of proposals for further developments.   Implementation of Big Data in organisations is often connected to high expectations and investment in advanced technology and methods for analysis. This case study explores expectations for and perspectives on the implementation of Big Data in the Norwegian Building Authority (DiBK), to support the development and interpretation of regulations. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with stakeholders in DiBK and an exploration of a pilot study by an external consultancy company. The theoretical framework for analysis is based on Integrated Design and Delivery Solution (IDDS), which focuses on: 1) integrated processes, 2) collaboration with people, and 3) interoperable technologies. The outcome shows variations in the interpretation of Big Data. This understanding is significant in relation to support in reuse of existing analyse, participation new projects and trust in outcome of Big Data based analyses. The expectations to outcome of Big Data analysis should be related to improved understanding of the complex mechanisms between the design of regulations and experiences with various technical building solutions, rather than trying to answer detailed questions on the relation between a single type of building damage and a specific paragraph in the regulations. The development of a road map for the continuous implementation and involvement of Big Data should be preferred, instead of the traditional master project implementation strategy. Increased use of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and sensors based on the Internet of things (IoT) can enable the increased and continuous capture of data into a joint fact based foundation. The use of Big Data has the potential to support changes to the processes of how regulations are drafted and how public regulations can interact with marked-driven aspects that have influence on quality of buildings and building products.

This conceptual paper explores the use of an integrated approach to implement BIM into the curriculum for undergraduates and graduates in engineering. The curriculum under study employed the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) pedagogical framework for integrating three BIM related standards and methods: the Information Delivery Manual (IDM), BIM-based Model Checker and BIM Execution Plan. As a case, this study uses the development of a 2-year master’s program in structural engineering and building technology. We have developed a concept called iBIMe, an acronym for integrated BIM in education. This concept has the potential to enable universities to support industry demand for BIM competency within existing curricula and resources.

  This chapter presents Building Information Model (BIM)-based model checking (BMC). BMC is often referred to as one of the major benefits in utilizing BIM, where everyone can perform compliance checking and design coordinating. Wide use of BMC software in BIM-based projects should therefore be expected. This study is based on a broad approach, ranging from exploring principles of model checking to practices in state-of-the-art companies, in addition to reviewing commercial software. Outcomes indicate that functionality in commercial software covers requirements for model checking in projects based on the use of simple rules and unspecified content of information in the BIM-file. Improved collaboration based on coordinating merged BIM-files and automatic clash detection was regarded as the main benefit. BMC was regarded as a part of company quality assurance systems for model coordination. Wide use was not observed, and the use of BMC software was regarded as a specialist tool operated by a limited number of users. This study indicates a potential for the further development of rule sets and procedures for trustworthy compliance checking. In this respect, BMC can be regarded as a catalyst for the exchange of high-quality BIM for cross-disciplinary collaboration. Utilization of BMC can be an indicator of BIM-maturity.

  There is an increasing interest for BIM-based model checking in general. The use of public solutions for building permit approval is often highlighted as an example of practical use of BIM. A global spread of these solutions could therefore have been expected. However, implementations in other countries have been limited. This study analyses the Corenet solution in Singapore and the ByggSøk solution in Norway in respect to identify experiences that can be useful for other countries that intend to develop own solutions. Use of the Integrated Design and Delivery Solutions(IDDS) framework from CIB helps to explain elements with an impact on implementation of the solution. This type of explanation is often missing when presenting or comparing solutions. The impact of this study is increased understanding of knowledge transfer and awareness of which elements can be re-used from others in national implementations.

  This study explores methods for classification of degree of automatic processing of building permit applications to enable measurable objectives. The ongoing Norwegian ‘ByggNett’ (‘BuildNetwork’) initiative from the Norwegian government is used as a case study. ‘BuildNetwork’ is intending to be a national collaboration platform for the exchange of information among all private and public actors within the entire construction industry. The impact classification project states that 40% of buildings permit applications by the end of 2017 and 80% by the end of 2021 shall be processed automatic. These objectives are presented without defined criteria for classification. This disables the assessment of completion for objectives. Principles for distinguishing between facts complexity versus rule complexity and the combination of automatic processing versus decision support systems are explored. A framework with criteria for classification is presented to enable assessment of degree of automatic processing of building permit applications for validation of the objectives.

  Building applications / permissions are mandatory passing points from design to implement building construction. One important benefit from use of automatic building permission system is the possibility to check design solutions in advance, which might give a higher degree of predictability and reduced production time. BIM-based design systems (software and process) exist, and it is therefore a paradox that the number of solutions for automatic checking of building applications, complete or partial, is very limited. Specification of computable rules is a challenge. This paper argues for the need of increased integration between legal building authority, informatics and construction can enable a shift in development of regulations adapted for model checking. There are no clear terms for identifying different types of automatic model checking systems. A framework for classification of degree of automatic processing of building application systems is presented. A new Norwegian public project called “ByggNett” is presented to illustrate ideas for an automatic building applications system.

  The AEC industry is highly regulated by a large number rules given by public laws, codes, and regulative, standards national and international levels. The relevant information I these documents need to be captured as rules for model checking in a time- and cost effective way. The foundation for the RASE concept, mark-up based on the four operators; requirement (R), applicabilities (A), selection (S) and exceptions (E) on normative text. The RASE technology has been tested on following three categories of documents; standard (case: NS 11001-1.E:2009 Universal design of building constructions - Part 1: Work buildings and buildings open to the public), standards with tables (Dubai regulations) and guidelines (case: GSA court design guidance document, USA).. In both cases expectations have been document using free-prose. On examination, the key clauses and phrases can be identified along with their role, allowing a testable, logical statement to be generated. The logical statement is then ready to be used by a compliance checking engine to apply tests to a description of the facility. The results indicate that the RASE methodology can operate on a different types of normative documents with a trustworthy results.

  This paper present a concept for development of modular BIM guidelines based on a knowledge management perspective. BIM guideline is at present mainly developed by large companies / organisations, for their own need and processes. Due to high cost and time consuming development, these are often used in projects and processes which they are not optimized for. By turning the development process the other way round, and start by specifying relevant information in ―information modules‖. Information modules, IM, is a unit of information for a specified purpose, and can be both pre-defined or develop as a part or the design process, and collected into libraries. The IM‘s can be dynamic assembled into BIM guidelines. Use of the principles of modular BIM guidelines enables the AEC/FM companies to develop their own guidelines adapted to theirs requirements. Starting with specifying information modules can therefore be an initiative for development of active knowledge managements systems.

  In the architecture, engineering and construction industry (AEC) the transfer of knowledge and information through sharing, cooperation and collaboration serves to manage the inherent complexity of projects. Inter- and transdisciplinary teams including architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, suppliers and building owners, require shared design processes and understanding. Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) is part of how architectural information and knowledge is transferred through integrated processes. As part of an ongoing research this conference paper employs a Techno-Anthropological perspective to map existing research on the subject, to identify research gaps and to suggest further research. Given the ongoing changes the AEC industry is undergoing, we believe that Techno-Anthropology can contribute to systematic analysis and understanding of human-technology interactions. This research examines how VDC impacts upon the output of processes and how it affects the way interdisciplinary teams in AEC industry conceptualize and configure outputs.

  Products of AEC design – buildings – are often regarded as unique and based on this belief there is limited systematic awareness and investments in continuous improvements. Unlike a typical manufacturing process, where hundreds of samples are produced in highly controllable conditions, the production of a building is burdened with a higher risk of uncertainty. Because of that, it is common to base decisions on intuition, rules-of-thumb and own experiences. Unfortunately, this leads to unsatisfactory results: most projects exceed the initial budget, schedules overrun and in general AEC is considered as polluter and non-innovator. Can we get inspiration from industries that successfully utilise machine learning to improve decision-making? In a simplified definition, a machine learning algorithm is a function, which supplied with appropriate data returns some kind of knowledge. Think of simple linear regression: supplied with costs of buildings gives you a prediction of what would be the most probable cost of the next one. More elaborate ML algorithms find use in fraud detection, medical diagnosis, autonomous vehicles, natural language processing, image recognition, recommender systems etc. There are also successful or at least promising applications of ML in our industry, just to name a few: feasibility studies – analysing hundreds of cases to pick up the best performing, generative adversarial network (GAN) to create models or renderings, health and safety – recognising if workers are wearing PPE, landslide predictions, waste sorting using image vision and demolition waste prediction, point cloud object recognition, autonomous machines, finding best fire routes, CAD symbol recognition, delay risk assessment, predictive maintenance, fault diagnosis and many others.  Analysing sources of data in those examples one might ask how that relates to our promised single-source of truth about the building – BIM. It has well-defined ontology, semantics, user-friendly interface and even can be easily translated into graph representation. As of 2021 BIM is already ubiquitous in the design and construction phases. It helps to communicate design, coordinate, quantify, plan and generate lots of data, but still not enough relevant information. IFC – common BIM format – only stores the product information, without links to activities, decisions, feedback or time series. Our sources of data are siloed and poorly connected and this could be blocking us from wider industry 4.0 revolution in the built environment. Supposedly once we have a collection of true digital twins, with information not only about the building product but also activities, we could perform pattern recognition analysis to reveal the context of design changes from concept to final design. With initiatives like ISO19650 improving BIM information management or parametric modelling aiding design automation and defining constraints instead of outcomes, we are getting closer to the idea of having digital companion backed by machine learning. BIM is a rich data container about the building (product), however, it needs to be integrated with process-related data (decisions, activities, context) to create relevant source of knowledge. We therefore propose stakeholders implement procedures for management of integrated data as trustworthy source for development of machine learning solutions.

  We could not only digitalize but also automate workflows by creating a link - a specifically coded PSet - from four design programs to a cost estimation software. By using a custom-made PSet instead of mapping the IFC entities, we could not only adapt the workflow to road entities but also collect all cost relevant properties within one information module. This helped estimators with low BIM knowledge to find the information needed for cost estimation faster. The time consuming and error prone process with cost estimation was reduced by 50%. Automation of the cost estimation reduced manual errors to 0. Traditional manual workflows for creating the specification of work and the cost estimation were digitalized and automated based on existing pre-BIM standards. In addition to simply digitalizing traditional workflows, we added value downstream in the supply chain, reduced redundancy of information and improved the productivity within the project by automation.

  There is a challenge to include BIM in engineering curricula at bachelor and master levels, despite demand from the industry. This conceptual paper explore an integrated approach for implementation of building information modelling (BIM) in bachelor and master engineering curricula. This approach focuses on BIM for learning engineering, not for learning BIM as a single topic. BIM is embedded in traditional topics by use of principles, methods and tools for use/reuse and exchange of relevant information that support learning, and not only accomplishment of tasks. The core elements in the change of paradigm are enabled through viewing BIM as model, modelling and management as perspective for applying input, control and outcome of relevant information for engineering tasks. This approach is named the “3x3 concept”. Development of a 2-year master program in sustainable engineering is used as a case study. Arbeidet foregår på fire fronter fordelt på hver sin arbeidspakke: o Barrierer, Muligheter og Gevinster ved Digitalisering / Digital Tvilling for FDVU / FM og Bruk o Systematisering av Informasjon for Data Bruk i FDVU o Prosess, Organisering og Informasjon o FM-Behov i Dag og i Fremtiden 2. Organisasjonsaspektet trenger ytterligere forskning på kommunikasjon og samarbeid i prosjekter og byggets livssyklus der teknologi ses som en tilrettelegger. Arbeidet med scenarier er viktig for framtidsorienteringen av både temaet digitalisering og bærekraft i bygningsmiljøet. 3. Analyse av tidlig innhentet data viser: at «problemet» er mer relatert til implementering av standarder som finnes, enn mangel av standarder; digitalisering må sees både fra det organisatoriske aspektet og det teknologiske aspektet.; det er viktigere at teknologien gir godt utbytte enn at den er veldig fancy 4. Det er utgitt 14 publikasjoner i ulike fora samt kommunisert til bransjen. 5. Sammendrag av publikasjonene er tilgjengelig på 6. Pågående arbeid skal supplere og utdype tidligere funn for å få bedre samarbeid i BAE prosjektorganisasjonen for å gi mer nøyaktige og nyttige data ved levering av digital tvilling inkludert utforske hvordan barrierer for implementering kan overkommes. 7. Partnere er glad for inspirasjon til å tenke om framtiden, å se viktigheten av digitale tvillinger og opplever det som verdifullt å delta i prosjektet.
