Recording of the seminar:

Speaker: Hiroshi Miyashita, Professor of Law, Faculty of Policy Studies, Chuo University

This presentation introduces the recent digital policy in Japan with the establishment of a new Digital Agency there, and with some practices of artificial intelligence, facial recognition and smart cities in Japan. The talk covers, inter alia, proposals related to the roll-out of new facial recognition services, smart cities, and a data breach case involving job-recruiting services and a profiling scheme. It also draws some comparisons with the EU AIA proposal and EU laws and practices regarding data protection, in light of observations on the 2020 and 2021 amendments to the Japanese Act on the Protection of Personal Information.
