Is data protection a fundamental right for Third Country Nationals? Evidence from the use of Eurodac in Italy

The presentation focuses on Valeria Ferraris current work on Eurodac, one of the EU large-scale IT biometric. It is the oldest EU biometric database. Its purpose is to help to establish which Member State is responsible for the reception for asylum applications. On 31 December 2014, there were 2,707,339 sets of fingerprints stored in the System.

The presentation discusses the legal protection set in the Regulation and its effectiveness.

Valeria Ferraris is currently working as Research Fellow and Adjunct Professor at the University of Turin, and is visiting the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, University of Oslo and the Crimmigration-project this Winter.
