Hanna Gjelsvik Berg works on the BEYOND research project, led by Maja Janmyr, which studies the influence of the Refugee Convention in non-party states, and how these states contribute to the development of international refugee law. Berg’s master research focuses on the notion of "deservingness" among refugee groups, investigating how international agreements and securitisation mechanisms contribute to selecting refugees based on race and nationality. Furthermore, the study analyses Norway’s political and legal response to the influxes of Syrian and Ukrainian refugees, in order to gain insight on how discrimination among refugee groups occurs.

Background

Berg holds a BA in Journalism from Volda University College and an MA in International Relations from Oxford Brookes University. Through volunteer work she has supported unaccompanied refugee minors navigating the asylum process in the UK and facilitated activities for refugee families in Oslo. Through her journalistic career, she has worked as an investigative journalist, director and editor for numerous documentaries, such as Norge Bak Fasaden, Svindeljegerne, Insider and Toll. She has also worked for national newspapers as a writer and video journalist.
