Maisie Fitzmaurice works on the BEYOND research project, led by Maja Janmyr, which studies the influence of the Refugee Convention in non-party states, and how these states contribute to the development of international refugee law. Maisie’s masters research focused on the relationship between suicide, the right to life, and state responsibility in the context of the UK immigration detention regime. 

Background

Maisie holds a BA(Hons) in Development Studies and Study of Religions from SOAS, University of London, and an M.Phil in Theory and Practice of Human Rights from the University of Oslo. During her master’s thesis, she was affiliated with the research project NORMS (Deporting foreigners: Contested Norms in International Practice). Prior to joining the Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, Maisie worked as a research assistant at PRIO (Peace Research Institute Oslo) with projects on migration and social mobility. Before moving to Oslo, she worked at the British Refugee Council as an integration advisor.
