About the project

Leaving extremism and reintegrate to a society based on liberal democratic principles is complex processes. The Scandinavian government’s strategy to promote exit from extremism and reintegration to a liberal democratic society is providing welfare services such as social, health and economic services.

However, we have scarce knowledge on how the target group experience the interventions and on whether, how and why interventions aimed to promote exit and reintegration have any impact.

By investigating the interventions and the exiter’s, their relatives and implementers’ experiences of the interventions, I aim to explore the impact of different measurements. The objective is to increase the understanding of exit and reintegration processes and how welfare institutions can promote these processes.

Method

In the project I will interview key actors within welfare services who are providing welfare service to radicalized individuals. I will also interview those that have received the services (exiter’s) and their relatives about their experiences of the provided services.

Objectives

The main objective is to increase the understanding of exit and reintegration processes and improve the knowledge on how welfare institutions can promote these processes.

To reach this main objective I aim to generate rare empirical data on radicalised individuals’ biographical stories of their exit and reintegration processes. By including the exiter’s, their relatives and implementers’ experiences of the interventions I aim to increase the knowledge on the impact of welfare institutions’ interventions to promote exit and reintegration.

Project period

The project will run for four years from 2023–2027.

Financing

The doctoral project is part of the research project " Exit and effective reintegration of violent extremist in Scandinavia. The project is led by Norwegian University of Life Science (NMBU) and consist of a group of five researchers in Scandinavia.

The project is funded by the Norwegian Research Council. Project number 336618
