About the workshop
Many refugee situations have longstanding histories that have profound effects until today. For this longue durée understanding, the Archives of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR Archives) are indispensable. However, archives in general, and the UNHCR Archives in particular, often feel like strongholds, not open gates towards information.
On 10-11 January, 2024, the BEYOND project led by Prof. Dr. Maja Janmyr at the University of Oslo will organize “Navigating the UNHCR Archives”, a hands-on workshop on accessing and analyzing archival material from the international refugee organization. The workshop will take place at the University of Oslo and will be led by Dr. Sara Cosemans (KU Leuven), a historian with longstanding experience in various archives, especially at UNHCR.
Who Should Attend
This workshop targets early-career scholars, including PhD candidates. It aims to teach participants how to maximize their research stay(s) in the UNHCR Archives and how to better understand the collected material.
Successful candidates have at least visited the UNHCR archives once, and have gathered a sample of archival records, ready for analysis.

Financial Considerations
While the workshop itself is free of charge, participants are expected to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses.
