What is everyday life in closed detention centres like for immigrants in Norway, Italy and other European countries? How does it differ from or resemble being in prison?

What kind of impact do immigration control objectives have on the nature of contemporary policing?

How is a border surveillance system created? What kind of data gets collected, who has access and why, and what is the potential impact on the individual populations involved?

What type of punishment is deportation? And what is the legal and historical context of deportation?

The study aims to map the processes of social exclusion and how they differ with regard to citizens and non-citizens. By doing that, it aims to provide insight into the different faces of sovereignty - welfare and criminalisation: when and why the state chooses one over the other, with regard to which populations and with what consequences?
