Castberg's Memorial Lecture: Professor Shaheen Sardar Ali and Professor Andreas L. Paulus

This year's Castberg Memorial Lecture is being held in connection with the University of Oslo's conferral of honorary doctorates to Professor Shaheen Sardar Ali (University of Warwick) and Professor Andreas L. Paulus (Georg-August University of Göttingen).

The Castberg Memorial Lectures will provide a unique opportunity to get better acquainted with the two new honorary doctors at the Faculty of Law. Each will reflect on their varied professional experiences from their own perspectives. There will be a break with refreshments between the two lectures. After each lecture, there will be an opportunity for questions and comments. The two honorary doctors have shared the following about their lectures:

Professor Shaheen Sardar Ali (University of Warwick): I will reflect upon my unique experiences and position of an activist academic and share the way in which my research has informed practice and vice versa. I will share my work in multiple roles nationally and internationally, how my perceptions of human rights got translated into policy and practice and how in turn, practices deepened my understanding of the complex nature of human rights.  Some examples include my role as the first female cabinet Minister (Pakistan), first Chair of the National Commission on the Status of Women (Pakistan), vice-chair of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, Rector of the National Academy of Higher Education (Pakistan) and now most recently as member of the UN Independent International Fact Finding Mission on Iran.

Professor Andreas L. Paulus (Georg-August University of Göttingen): I will speak on my professional practice as a constitutional judge and international lawyer, citing as examples the interrelationship of the German and the international legal order(s), climate change, and intellectual property. Building on my lecture a day before, I will reflect on the relationship between constitutionalism and to internationalism, drawing on my experience as a justice of the Federal Constitutional Court. In the current state of affairs, it seems that the case for both constitutional adjudication and international law must be made anew.

The Castberg Memorial Lectures

The Castberg Memorial Lecture is an annual event hosted by the Department of Public and International Law, in memory of Professor Frede Castberg (1893-1977), the founder of the Department of Constitutional and International Law (now known as the Department of Public and International Law).

Castberg was a central figure in 20th-century Norwegian legal scholarship, with a substantial body of work in constitutional law, administrative law, international law, and legal philosophy. His two-volume work, Norges statsforfatning (first published in 1935), is considered one of his major contributions.

Among his many achievements, Castberg introduced political science as a discipline at the University of Oslo. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Law and held the position of Rector of the University of Oslo for two terms.

Frede Castberg was an international law consultant for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for over 50 years and served as Norway's representative on the European Commission of Human Rights. His international stature is further evidenced by his honorary doctorates from several foreign universities and his role as president of the Hague Academy of International Law.
