Vice-Chair of the CEDAW Committee

Violeta Neubauer is independent women’s human rights and gender equality expert from Slovenia. She is a member of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) since 2007 and its current Vice-Chair. Her CEDAW related activities include provision of consultancy services to the UN specialized agencies (UN WOMEN, UNDP, UNFPA and UNICEF) as well as to regional intergovernmental organisations (Council of Europe, OSCE and OECD) and to national and international NGOs. She has provided training, capacity building and/or strategic advice to government officials, judges, prosecutors, lawyers and other relevant officials, members of national parliaments and independent human rights institutions as well as expert assistance and networking support to NGOs in Europe, Central Asia and Middle East.

She has been active in the Council of Europe work to promote gender equality since 1993, including as a member of its Gender Equality Commission and its predecessor Steering Committee for Equality between Women and Men (CDEG), Vice-Chair of the Group of Specialists on Gender Equality Standards and Mechanisms, and representative of CDEG in the drafting process of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence and the Council of Europe Convention on Action against Trafficking in Human Beings.

Prior to her retirement she worked as a gender equality expert with the Office of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia for Equal Opportunities (1992-2012) and was a member of Government consultative, co-ordinating and other bodies and member of various national non-governmental organisations.
