About our research

The research at Scandinavian Institute of Maritime Law is related to five main areas.

  • Legal framework for the shipping, offshore and energy sectors
  • Contracts in the shipping, offshore and energy sectors
  • Security and liability within the shipping, offshore and energy sectors
  • Law of the energy market
  • Energy, offshore, shipping and environment
  • Infrastructure in the transport sector

As a Nordic institute, the Institute has a formal obligation to promote research within these fields, not only in Norway, but in the five Nordic countries as well. The research areas will be analyzed in the light of among others

i. the development in Norwegian, Nordic and international rules and contracts of these areas
ii. the development of the organizing of the shipping, offshore and energy sectors
iii. excisting and new common laws of property rights, administrative law, EU law and public international law
iv. environment considerations and the development in environmental law

Within the research field Contracts in the shipping, offshore and energy sectors, a research group in Contract Law was established in 2012 in collaboration with the Department of Private Law. The Institute also hosts and participates in the research group in Natural Resources Law.

Publishing

Our research is often published in the periodical MarIus, or in books and international publications. The periodical also comprises our yearbook SIMPLY - The Scandinavian Institute’s Maritime and Petroleum Law Yearbook.
