About the project
Froukje Platjouw's post-doc project 'Ecosystem-based governance in the Arctic' is part of the UiO's Arctic program. The project examines the possibility for an ecosystem-based governance approach to the Arctic ecosystem while also taking into account existing international and regional frameworks, national jurisdictional boundaries, geopolitical interests, and climate change effects.
Aim of the project
The aim is to examine legal opportunities and barriers to the protection of the Arctic marine ecosystem and biodiversity while also balancing this need for protection with the increasing interest in the intensification of industrial activities, such as shipping, fisheries, mining and tourism.
In addition to studying international and regional legal developments, an important part of this project will delve into national Arctic states' legal and policy frameworks with regard to certain components of ecosystem-based governance such as marine protected areas, marine spatial planning and adaptive governance in marine areas under national jurisdiction.
There is a need to identify possible inconsistencies, gaps and regulatory bottlenecks among Arctic states' national legislation which may hamper an ecosystem-based governance approach to the Arctic ecosystem.
The project started in 2017 and ends in 2021.
Results
Results from the project will be published in relevant journals.
