"Protecting the environment goes hand-in-hand with protecting the rights of those who defend it”
The international community, with the landmark UN resolution lead by Norway (2019) has recognized the crucial role of environmental defenders for the fulfilment of the 2030 agenda. However, working to protect the environment can be deadly, something sadly well documented by the UN as well as NGOs. Violent attacks and threats to families of defenders, enforced disappearances, illegal surveillance, travel bans, blackmail, sexual harassment, judicial harassment and use of force to dispel peaceful protests are committed by State and non-State actors to stop, criminalize and hinder this activity
In this panel, we want to lift the conversation around strategies and tactics used by actors that are protection the right to defend a clean and healthy environment. What can the new special rapporteur on environmental human rights defenders under the Aarhus convention bring into this highly critical situation? What strategies are local activist and organizations using?
What can States, but also companies and business do to address the situation and protect people and organizations advocating for a healthy environment?
