About the Seminar:

In this seminar we welcome the President of the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) and Judge of the Truth and Acknowledgment Section of the Peace Tribunal, Roberto Carlos Vidal López who will present the caselaw of the JEP and discuss its contribution to promoting a model of restorative justice after armed conflict.

The Special Jurisdiction for Peace (Jurisdicción Especial para la Paz or JEP in Spanish) is a transitional justice mechanism created as part of the peace agreement signed between the Colombian government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrilla group in 2016. Colombia’s transitional tribunal was set up to investigate, prosecute, and sanction those who committed crimes during the Colombian armed conflict, with a focus on achieving truth, justice, reparation, and non-repetition.

One of the key features of the JEP is its focus on restorative justice. Hence, the JEP is not solely focused on punishing those who committed crimes, but also on contributing to the reparations and restoration of victims and society as a whole. The use of restorative justice in the JEP's cases presents an opportunity to promote a more inclusive and holistic approach to justice that addresses the needs of victims and communities affected by the armed conflict in Colombia. The JEP may serve as a successful model of transitional justice that could assist future transitional scenarios to develop local solutions to armed conflict within the standards of international law.

The Presentation by the Judge will be followed by a roundtable conversation with academics:
