The theme for 2021 is ASEAN’S GOLDEN CHANCE TO SAVE “THE GOLDEN LAND”: SEEKING REGIONAL SOLUTIONS TO RESTORE DEMOCRACY AND PROTECT HUMAN RIGHTS IN MYANMAR.

The competition ran from May to August 2021. In total, 291 undergraduate with a diverse academic background participated in the competition.  They are from 9 countries in this region, including Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam. After weeks of expert panel deliberation and popular vote through SHAPE SEA's online platform,, the organisers are proud to announce this year’s Top 3 winners and one most popular essay.  The four winners will be invited to present their essays in the upcoming SEAHRN mini conference scheduled on 28-29 October 2021.

The essay competition aims to provide undergraduate students in Southeast Asia with a platform to analyse ASEAN's role in addressing current social, political, cultural and economic situations in Myanmar, as well as to give recommendations for ASEAN and its member-states on pursuit of the restoration of democracy and the ability of the people of Myanmar to fully claim their basic rights and freedoms.
