Strengthening the Human Rights and Peace Reaching in South East Asia

The ASEAN University Network – Human Rights Education, hosted by the Institute of Human Rights and Peace Studies in Mahidol University (IHRP), Thailand, has recently organized two teacher trainings on Human Rights and Peace in South East Asia.

These workshops were supported by the NCHR. The objective of the workshops is to promote human rights and peace education through capacity building of lecturers and scholars working in the ASEAN region. It achieves this objective through organizing learning programs for lecturers and scholars and organizing dialogues amongst human rights and peace educators.

The 6th Regional Teacher Workshop on Human Rights and Peace

This workshop was held in collaboration with The Research and Education for Peace (REPUSM) in Universiti Sains Malaysia and the Strengthening Human Rights and Peace Research and Education in ASEAN/SEA Program. 20 teachers from different universities in Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand attended.

This workshop aimed to build and strengthen knowledge on theories and concepts of peace, conflict and violence; to establish links between human rights and peace; to develop skills for teaching peace; and to introduce lecturers to textbooks and other resources for teaching peace.

The workshop focused on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills for teaching human rights and peace. The NCHR supported textbook, Peace and Conflict Transformation in Southeast Asia, was provided as the basic reading material to the participants. The resource persons are all experts in this region.

Teacher training on Human Rights in Myanmar and Malaysia

The ASEAN University Network organized a digital National Teacher Workshop on Teaching Human Rights for teacherss from Myanmar and Malaysia recently.

The program included sessions on substantive themes on human rights and current topics such as status of human rights in Malaysia and Myanmar and the academic freedom in teaching human rights. The Workshop also aimed to build skills of human rights practice such as human rights fact-finding and documentation. There was also a focus on pedagogy such as human rights education in conflict situations and enhancing effectiveness in teaching human rights at the undergraduate level. At the end of the workshop, the participants put their learning into practice and presented a course/curriculum/learning program on human rights designed by themselves.  

Feedback

Feedback from the participants showed a very high level of satisfaction. Participants appreciated the participatory pedagogy that provided them an opportunity and space to strengthen their knowledge and skills through reflection, dialogue and practice.
