Strengthening cooperation on investigative interviewing in Thailand

NCHR meets with Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ), the Department of Special Investigations (DSI), and visits the Royal Police Cadet Academy (RPCA) to introduce and discuss implementation of the interviewing method investigative interviewing in Thailand.

Invited by the Thailand Institute of Justice (TIJ), NCHR visited Thailand late April. NCHR has a longstanding cooperation with TIJ aimed at disseminating and providing training on the human rights compliant and effective police interviewing method, investigative interviewing for law enforcement and the prosecution in Thailand.

Providing training on Investigative interviewing

NCHR was welcomed at TIJ 28. April before heading off to the Department of Special Investigations (DSI). DSI officers and representatives from TIJ and the state prosecutor were present as DSI provided an overview of previous cooperation with NCHR and gave a tour of DSI’s new facilities, which included state-of-the-art interviewing facilities. NCHR introduced new developments related to the Mendez Principles on Effective Interviewing for Investigations and Information Gathering, and the UN Office on Drugs and Crimes eLearning on investigative interviewing.

NCHR also met with TIJ Executive Director, Dr. Phiset Sa-ardyen to discuss the way forward, including an upcoming training on Investigative interviewing for TIJ and DSI.

Keen interest in further training

On Friday 29. April, NCHR visited the Royal Police Cadet academy together with TIJ. NCHR introduced and discussed the investigative interviewing method and ongoing projects, received a tour of the facilities, and met with the Police Major General Thatchai Pitanilabutr, the Commissioner of Sampran Royal Police Cadet Academy. Following the meeting, the Commissioner expressed a keen interest in investigative interviewing and NCHR committed to conduct a training for senior staff and cadets in June 2022.
