Call for Applications: Intensive Course in Human Rights 2023

The Norwegian Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) is now welcoming applications to the annual intensive course. Deadline 3 April 2023.

The Intensive Course will be held in Norway at the Faculty of Law, the University of Oslo, between 4-8 September 2023. 

About the Course 

Every year the NCHR organizes a multi-disciplinary human rights course. The course has a strong international profile. We encourage applicants with different backgrounds and professions who want to strengthen their ability to integrate human rights standards into their work and expand their knowledge about the international human rights system.

Under the course, participants will get knowledge on: 

  • International human rights standards 
  • The systems in place for protecting human rights at the UN, regional, and national levels 
  • Practical application of human rights 
  • Key contemporary human rights issues

Financial information

Course fee

The course fee is 5000 NOK and includes lunch and coffee breaks at the Centre and a welcome and farewell dinner. Kindly note that all other expenses in connection to participation are not included. 

Stipend

Stipends are available to persons representing institutions with limited financial resources and from low or middle-income countries.

The stipend will cover the following: 

  • Course fee (5000 NOK)
  • Travel
  • Accommodation 
  • Visa if necessary

    • Maximum 2 pages
  2. Motivation letter 
    • Maximum 1 page. Must include the reason for applying, relevance of the course, and how it can be valuable/integrated into your current work
  3. Whether you are applying for a stipend
    • A brief justification in your motivation letter is sufficient
    • Please note that the selection process for stipends is particularly competitive

Selection Criteria 

The NCHR will select participants based on the following criteria:

  • Job relevance: The course primarily targets professionals and practitioners who will benefit from increased human rights knowledge in their daily work
  • Added value: This is a basic course, and we usually do not prioritize applicants who already have undergone extensive studies in human rights
  • Geographical location: We aim to select a diverse group of participants who can provide an array of perspectives and experiences
  • Gender balance: It is essential for us to have a gender balance among the participants
  • Language: An adequate level of written and oral English skills is required to follow the course

Expectations and Preparations 

Please note that all participants are expected to spend time preparing for the course, including pre-course readings, participate actively during the sessions and submit a brief post-course evaluation.
