Academic Background and Interests
Samantha is a research assistant at the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights (NCHR). She is currently undertaking an MPhil in the Theory and Practice of Human Rights at the University of Oslo. Her research interests include access to health care services, ethics in public health, sustainable development and urbanisation, tenure security, and land reform, primarily in Southern Africa.
Her MPhil thesis focuses on the right to health in South Africa and how residents of urban informal settlements access health care services, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. She holds an MA Degree in Social and Psychological Research from the University of the Witwatersrand and a BA and BSocSci Honours Degree in Psychology from the University of Pretoria in South Africa.
Prior to the NCHR, she worked with the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa (SERI) to inform policies on the upgrading of informal settlements, basic services, and tenure security in South Africa. She has previous experience in public health research, policy formation, and programme implementation centring on HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis.
